Overview

The Handheld Vein Finder is a near-infrared (NIR) vein visualization device that projects a real-time map of subcutaneous veins directly onto the patient's skin. Using the principle that hemoglobin in blood absorbs infrared light more strongly than surrounding tissue, the device detects venous patterns and displays them as a high-contrast image, enabling clinicians to locate veins that are difficult to see or palpate. This significantly improves first-attempt venipuncture success rates and reduces patient discomfort from repeated needle sticks.

Common Applications

How to Use

  1. Power on the device and allow it to complete its self-check. Select the appropriate imaging mode for adult patients.
  2. Position the patient's limb comfortably and apply a tourniquet to promote venous distension.
  3. Hold the device approximately 15–25 cm above the target area, keeping it perpendicular to the skin surface for optimal projection accuracy.
  4. Adjust the brightness and contrast settings until the vein pattern is clearly visible on the skin.
  5. Identify a suitable vein — look for straight segments without bifurcations or valves. Note the depth indicator if available.
  6. Perform venipuncture along the projected vein path, maintaining the device position until the needle is secured.
  7. After successful access, release the tourniquet and power off the device. Clean the surface per facility protocols.
